Abstract

There are many reasons for replacing one material by another: Besides technical advantages such as better performance, lower weight or smaller dimensions, the straightforward wish for an overall more economic product is certainly one of the key drivers. Whatever the motivation is, material substitution means more than just to make the same component from a different material. Federal-Mogul describes the level of system understanding required to replace a brass synchronizer ring by a cost-effective powder metal component of the same performance.
