Abstract

The airway epithelium and neutral endopeptidase (NEP) play an important role in the modulation of airway smooth muscle contraction induced by neuropeptides. Whether maturational differences of these modulatory mechanisms exist has not been investigated. We studied the effects of NEP inhibition and epithelium removal on substance P (SP)-induced contraction of tracheal smooth muscle (TSM) segments in rabbits of varying ages.
