Abstract

The subsolidus phase equilibrium relation in the BaO-Tio 2 -Fe 2 O 3 system at 1240°C in air has been investigated by conventional solid state reaction techniques and X-ray powder diffraction. Twelve quarternary compounds were recognized, BaTi 1-x Fe x O 3-x (0.1<x<0.75) (N), Ba 3 TiFe 10 O 20 (K), BaTi 2 Fe 4 O 11 (R), Ba 2 Ti 4 Fe 2 O 13 (J), Ba x Ti 4-2x Fe 2x O 8 (0.55<x<0.67) (H), Ba 12 Ti 16 Fe 30 O 89 (I), Ba 3.5 Ti 5 Fe 23 O 48 (O). Ba 1.8 Ti 4.4 Fe 13.6 O 31 (L), BaTi 2 O 5 (0.2 mol% Fe 2 O 3 ) (Q), Ba 2 Ti 4.73 Fe 0.27 O 11.865 (P), B a5 Ti 13 Fe 2 O 34 (A), and Ba g Ti 16 Fe 6 O 49 (B). The phases J, I, O, L, Q, P, A and B are new compounds found in this study. Oxidation of Fe 3+ to Fe 4+ was observed in the BaO rich region (50 mol%). Ba 12 Ti 16 Fe 30 O 89 (I) is a ferrimagnet with a T c around 130°C.
