Abstract

The merging of the Birmingham Library with the Birmingham and Midland Institute has sent a mild shiver through the faded rooms of the proprietary and subscription libraries. Not that the Birmingham Library has suffered under the change of ownership, rather the contrary; but the merger represents the extinguishing of one more of the dwindling band of similarly constituted libraries.
