Abstract

Abstract : Two submicron aerosol particle analyzers of increasingly complex design were developed. The final objective of this program was the development of a real-time aerosol characterization and identification system for particles in the 100 to 1500 nanometer size range. Two completed systems were delivered to the Army contractor. Each system was able to collect the light scattered from individual aerosol particles at, respectively, 16 and 24 angles. Data at all angles can be collected at rates in excess of 200 particles per second. Major breakthroughs were made in the design and implementation of real-time data- processing hardware, but due to budget limitations, this incomplete software aspect of the system was not incorporated into the final design. Keywords: Aerosol; Light scattering; Obscurants; Particle analyzer; Aerosol identification; Multiangle scattering.
