Abstract

Schwannoma, also known as neurilemoma, is a benign neoplasm derived from Schwann cells, most commonly found in soft tissues and is slow-growing. The objective of the present study was to report the case of a schwannoma in the submandibular region of a 50-year-old female leucoderm patient without comorbidities who arrived at the maxillofacial surgery service presenting an increase in single tumor volume in the submandibular region with an evolution of about 1 year, painless palpation, softened appearance, and smooth surface. At tomographic examination, a mass measuring 36 × 23 mm was observed, well circumscribed with heterogeneous density in close contact with the left submandibular gland. Because of the clinical observation, the initial diagnostic hypothesis was pleomorphic adenoma. Fine needle cytology and punch cytology were performed for the definitive diagnosis, revealing it to be schwannoma. An excisional biopsy was performed under general anesthesia, with preservation of the submandibular gland, confirming initial hypothesis. The patient is being followed up.
