Abstract

This section presents list of names, terms and concepts of ancient synagogue. Ancient synagogues, institutional matrixes in which two world religions were born, have been discussed and debated by scholars of Early Judaism and Christianity since modern historical research entered world of academics around 16th century. The Enlightenment, however, did not mark beginning of learned interest in early synagogue. As is evident in works of Philo and Josephus, ideas and assumptions about origin and nature of these institutions flourished already in first century C.E. The descriptions of, and references to the synagogue and its activities comment on Judaism as a religious or ethnic tradition rather than inform reader about institutional realities in any given century. Keywords: ancient synagogue; early Christianity; early Judaism; Enlightenment; Josephus; Philo
