Abstract
In recent years, o ff-grid technologies have begun to compete with grid extension in rural electrification. Because these technologies are often sold by private companies and only o er limited loads and hours of power, understanding people's subjective satisfaction with them is critical for the analysis of technology adoption. Unfortunately, existing studies do not distinguish between grid electricity and off -grid technologies. Here we use the freely available ACCESS dataset of 8,563 households in rural India to examine people's subjective satisfaction with grid and off -grid electricity. We find few differences in the average level of satisfaction even though o ff-grid technologies o er fewer hours of power. We also find that people using off -grid technologies are not very sensitive to the availability of hours, unlike households connected to the grid.
