The project, conducted by the Northeastern University Automated Teaching Project, was supported by grants from the Fund for the Advancement of Education and the Learning Resources Institute. Dr. Hickey was head of the Northeastern University Automated Teaching Project. The survey reported here was a part of the total project and was conducted by New England Con' sultants, Inc. The authors are president and vice-president, respectively, of this survey research organization. The conclusions and interpretations made by the authors are their own and do not imply official endorsement by those supporting and coordinating this project. 2 An equally important portion of the assessment of the supplementary workbook was a comparison of the experimental and control groups on the mid-term and final examinations given as a part of the course. The objective measure of the effectiveness of the programed workbook was not the responsibility of the authors. This portion of the research was conducted by Drs. Hickey and Autor.
