We investigate whether neurophysiological correlates of those complaints can be found with magnetoencephalography (MEG) during the completion of a memory task. Elderly participants (N=51), aged 72±8, were divided into the following groups: Patients with both Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), an objective deficit as assessed by a neuropsychological test, and SMC; Participants with SMC but no MCI; Healthy controls with neither SMC nor MCI. Brain activity patterns were reconstructed with Minimum-Norm Estimates. While the SMC group showed higher activation than the control group in the left inferior parietal, left temporal and right premotor cortices, there were no statistically significant differences between the SMC and the OMI groups. These results suggest that a neurophysiological dysfunction may underlie subjective memory complaints.
