Abstract

1.1. The average total lipide content of nine air-dried samples of Rhodotorula gracilis was 31.23% of the dry weight.2.2. The average amount of phospholipide was 1.2% of the dry weight and 3.8% of the total lipides. The phospholipides contained 1.1% N and 3.3% P with a molar ratio of 1.22.3.3. The acetone-soluble (which includes the “ether-soluble”) comprised the major part of the total lipides, averaging 88%, the remainder consisting of phospholipides, waxy material, and “firmly bound” lipide.4.4. Choline, serine, and glycerophosphoric acid (87.6% alpha) were obtained from the phospholipides. No ethanolamine or sphingosine and no inositol or sugar-containing phospholipides were found.5.5. The nonsaponifiable material averaged 2.7% of the dry weight of the yeast and 8.6% of the total lipides. Ergosterol and two other unidentified sterols were isolated. The crude sterol preparation averaged 0.42% of the dry weight of the yeast and 1.35% of the total lipide content.6.6. An insoluble polysaccharide was obtained from the methanol extract which yielded only glucose on hydrolysis.
