Abstract

The electronic characteristics of intermetallic compounds are significantly altered when they are hydrogenated. This is reflected in the change of their magnetic properties. Various effects are noted such as the conversion of Pauli paramagnets into ferrimagnets, conversion of ferrimagnets into antiferromagnets, enhancement of ferromagnetism, alteration of magnetic anisotropy, development of spin-glass structures, suppression of superconductivity and suppression of valence fluctuations. These effects are illustrated using the systems Th6Mn23, Y6Mn23, Ho6Fe23, R2Fe14B (R ≡ a rare earth), ZrCrFeT0.8 (T ≡ Mn, Fe, Co or Ni), Zr(Fe1−xVx)2, CeNi5−xCux and their hydrides. Of particular interest is the enhancement of the iron moment and the increase of the magnetic ordering temperature in rare earth-iron compounds by hydrogenation.
