Abstract

Summary form only given. We present a family of closed-form analytical solutions of Hermite-Gaussian pulses which are exact solutions of the paraxial wave equation. These solutions describe isodiffacting ultrashort pulses with higher-order transverse spatial modes. They can be used to model higher-order ultrashort pulses generated by mode locking of both longitudinal and transverse modes in laser cavities. Our solutions show that a total mode lock of TEM/sub 00/ and TEM/sub 01/ transverse spatial modes leads to subharmonic oscillations of the output pulse intensities and a spatial sweeping of femtosecond laser pulses.
