Abstract

Subgemmal neurogenous plaque (SNP) is a structure generally found on the tongue, showing varied and non-specific clinical characteristics. Our study describes the clinicopathological characteristics of six patients, four females and two males, who had lesions on the lateral border of the tongue. The mean age was 46 years (ranging from 29-63 years). Although all cases were at the same anatomical site, the clinical characteristics varied from erythematous ulcer to white nodule, including two painful lesions. Lesion duration was provided in 4 cases, ranging from 0.5 to 120 months. All patients were submitted to biopsy procedures. The histological analysis displayed clusters of neural and lymphoid cells below the epithelial tissue. In four cases, this histological pattern was associated with lymphoepithelial cysts. The histologic diagnosis of SNP with or without associated lesions was made for all cases. After the biopsy procedure, none of the patients required additional treatment. Funding: FAPEMIG.
