Abstract

The article by F. Webrle, et al. on the management of acute bacterial meningitis prompts me to the following comment. On page 997 it is stated ". . . about 10% of infants and young children with acute purulent meningitis will develop clinically significant effusions." Throughout the years I have been wondering why this complication in pediatric practice in Holland is only very rarely observed. May it be that (too) liberal administration of intravenous fluids is important in this respect?
