Abstract

The most common side effect of opioids is opioid-induced constipation (OIC). No drug is specifically approved currently for treatment of OIC in patients receiving opioids for chronic non-malignant pain. Subcutaneous (SC) methylnaltrexone decreases constipating effects of opioids without affecting central analgesia. We report additional efficacy results from the double-blind phase of a randomized, placebo-controlled study of methylnaltrexone in patients taking opioids for chronic non-malignant pain.
