Abstract

This article presents organisational structure of mica-manufacturing industry, changes in the organisation after the fall of the industry, and sub-contracting relationship between the agents therein. The survey of mica-manufacturing industries of Giridih in Jharkhand shows that sub-contracting system helps in depressing daily wage rate for both male and female workers. But female workers are most vulnerable due to patriarchal values that distinguish 'male jobs' from 'female jobs', thus reserving unskilled jobs for women. Consequently, female workers are grossly underpaid than their male counterparts.
