Abstract

In modern times, cataract has become an outpatient surgery with postoperative complications being limited to inflammation, ocular hypertension, or cystoid macular edema in most cases. We present a case of subconjunctival dirofilariasis in a 78-year-old woman after cataract surgery. Zoonotic filariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens has been widely reported from several parts of the world, in particular in Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, Central Asia, and Sri Lanka. However, such reports from India are rare and have been noted particularly in southern India, with a few cases from other parts of the country. We report this unusual finding 2 weeks after surgery. We initially thought it was postoperative inflammation because it was not possible to examine the patient for logistical reasons.
