Abstract

The subcephalic muscle of Latimeria probably was derived from one or more anterior body myomeres such as occur in Recent polypterids. In early gnathostomes this musculature primitively may have spanned the division (fissura occipitalis lateralis) between otic (paleocranial) and occipital (neocranial) regions of the neurocranium, and may have shifted forward, segmenting off as a distinct muscle, in relation to the appearance of the new and relatively advanced intracranial joint of primitive sarcopterygians.
