Abstract

Phagocytosis is a delicate process executed by phagocytes during which cells engulf particular foreign matter (>0.5 µm) into a vacuolar structure. The process is initiated by ligand-receptor interactions between particle and cell surface. After the sealing of phagocytic cup, phagosome undergoes sequential fusion and fission with endocytic vesicles to form microbicidal phagolysosome, leading to degradation of internalized material. Phagosome maturation requires precise spatiotemporal coordination of physical and chemical changes between phagosomes and other intracellular compartments.
