Abstract

Fuji Heavy Industries, the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles, is installing the world’s first boxer diesel engine for passenger cars in the Subaru Legacy and Outback. The advantages of the horizontally opposed engine layout are reduced vibration, a low centre of gravity and high rigidity. This design results in the best fuel efficiency in the 4WD passenger vehicle class, according to the Japanese vehicle producer. Both the Legacy and the Outback are getting the diesel engine as part of the 2008 model line-up for the European market. The engine will be made available in a wider range of vehicles in future models.
