Abstract

The Q( 1 2 ) 1 2 and R( 1 2 ) 1 2 transitions of the nitric oxide fundamental are reported with an experimental line-width (F.W.H.M.) of 13.9 MHz. The spectra show well resolved hyperfine structure from the 14N nuclear spin and are in excellent agreement with predictions based on the microwave spectrum of nitric oxide. It is concluded that the major contributor to the observed line-width is the PbS x Se 1− x diode laser used to observe the spectra.
