Abstract

Iron is a trace element critical to normal human biochemistry and physiology. At high levels, iron overwhelms the storage capacity of the body, and can act as a powerful toxin leading to organ damage, prolonged morbidity and even death. This chapter provides a background on the physical and physiological principles of iron to better understand iron absorption, excretion, and deposition patterns in the body.
