Abstract

Bowel Dysfunction (BD) affects medical care and Quality of Life (QoL) in more than 1/3 of patients after Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Such difficulty with evacuation, fecal incontinence, and visceral symptoms commonly cause persons with SCI to avoid travel, work, and other activities outside the home. Surgical and radiological irrigating colostomy tubes have been successfully used for bowel control. Ponsky, reported Percutaneous Endoscopic Colostomy (PEC) in 1986 for a case of non-obstructive colonic dilation, and we previously reported a retrospective pediatric PEC series in 2001.
