Abstract

Most patients of cirrhotic portal hypertension (PH) develop esophagogastric varices. However, some patients may develop varices at unusual or extra-esophagogastric sites which are known as ectopic or aberrant varices. Ectopic varices may develop in the stomach (nonfundic gastric varices), duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon, rectum and the peritoneum. The exact prevalence of ectopic varices in PH is not well studied. Although rare, bleeding from ruptured ectopic varices is often massive and fatal, possibly because they are more difficult to detect and treat than esophageal varices.
