Abstract

of life trended toward being lower (P=0.055) in the dropout group. There were no differences in demographic characteristics between dropouts and completers. Conclusions: 1) Convenience or bother appear to play a greater role in contributing to dropout than study burden; 2) Against prediction, there were no differences in psychological or demographic characteristics between dropouts and completers in the trial; 3) The trend toward lower quality of life in dropouts raises the question as to whether those most needing intervention are being reached. Studies are needed investigating factors contributing to dropout rates and interventions to enhance completion of IBS trials, particularly in children.
