Abstract

On the basis of some new understanding of the forced vortex in hydrocyclones, a new type of hydrocyclone with no forced vortex has been developed. In this paper, the three-dimensional characteristics of both new and conventional cyclones, measured by LDA (laser doppler anemometer), are reported in detail. It is shown that the newly developed hydrocyclone has higher tangential velocity and lower radial velocity than the conventional type, and, therefore, a smaller separation size.
