Abstract

The High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system is an important technique to advance power system performance so as to improve the flow of power along transmission lines and making the power system more flexible, cost-effective and controllable. This paper presents a solution for the overloaded transmission lines and the selection of the optimal route for the HVDC line. A genetic algorithm (GA) used, to optimize the voltage profile and reduce power losses. Many cases have taken to study the system behaviour in the presence and absence of the HVDC line under variable conditions. MATLAB used to engage both the GA program and the Newton Raphson method to solve the load flow in the grid. The proposed approach examined and tested on the IEEE 30bus System. Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSSE) package Version 32.0 used as practical part to solve functions of power system performance. A comparison made between the experimental and practical part in the use of HVDC, as it proved the extent of similarity under different loading conditions for the total load. It was shown from the results that the system will stay away from overloading after adding the HVDC line to the optimum location with better generation and appropriate parameters.
