Abstract

Providing methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone to inmates to treat their opioid use disorder (OUD) shows great promise in reducing the risk of overdose when they are released from jail. That release period, the period of reentry, is the most dangerous for these drug users. But more than that is needed—they need to leave prison or jail with the medication, a study has found.
