Abstract
Introduction: Severe Zn deficiency is a major health concern in both developing and industrial countries which affects children's growth and development. Zn deficiency may have irreversible effect on children's health condition. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Zn deficiency prevalence among 2 to 6 years old children. Materials and Method: A cross sectional study was done in year 2015 in Esfahan. The children were from 2 to 6 years old. The candidates were invited to the health center to follow their routine health and growth development. A blood sample was taken to measure serum Zn level. Result: 320 children were chosen for this study in a randomized fashion. 44% of the candidates were female and 56% were male. 45.6% of the children had a normal sufficient diet of meat and grains during the last year and 57% lived in a hygienic suitable environment and had conversant parents. Regarding Zn deficiency, male candidates had higher prevalence (64%) in comparison to female candidates (36%). 37% of this group has never used Zn supplement up to the study. Conclusion: Our study showed that male candidates had lower Zn serum level although no meaningful relation was found between age and serum Zn level. This review suggests that overall benefits of Zn supplement outweigh its side effects. However, it is advised that Zn supplementation should be in correlation with the children's natural diet enrichment besides using generic supplements.
