Therefore, carrying out urban road cavity detection is of great significance. The newly developed 3D GPR has greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of cavity detection. However, misinterpretation often exists in the 3D GPR data due to the presence of underground facilities. And the cavities formed by various causes show different wavefield characteristics in 3D GPR data. We have carried out 3D GPR detection experiments on urban roads of more than 1000 km in Shenzhen, China. By analyzing a large number of field 3D GPR data, we extracted many abnormal areas and drilled them for inspection. Then the wavefield characteristics of cavities formed by pipe leakage, non dense subgrade backfilling and surface water infiltration in 3D GPR profiles are analyzed. At the same time, we found that the sewage pipe, repaired subgrade and other areas with underground facilities will show similar characteristics to the cavity in the 3D GPR data. The results show that the cavities wavefield characteristics in 3D GPR profiles we summarized can improve the accuracy of data interpretation.
