Abstract

Steel slag has always posed an environmental problem for smelters and it is usually disposed off as a landfill material. Investigations on possible economic usage of steel slag has been conducted by researchers including its usage as a railroad ballast material. Steel slag which is obtained as a by-product from a steel mill in Singapore is studied with the objective of utilisation as railway ballast for the mass rapid transit system in Singapore. The laboratory test results indicated that the Singapore steel slag has all the desirable qualities for use as railway ballast material and its potential use for elevated tracks and tracks on ground is very encouraging.
