Abstract

The role of Ca in the grain refinement of Mg–Ca binary alloys was studied. The alloys were prepared with pure Mg and pure Ca. The results showed that with the increase of the content of Ca, there is a sharp decrease of the grain size of Mg with Ca content in the range of 0–0·5% and then there is a slight decrease of grain size with increasing the content of Ca from 0·5 to 2%. The grain size becomes increasing with further increasing the content of Ca. The variation of Vickers hardness has a similar trend to that of the microstructure. This paper presents these results and gives corresponding discussions.
