Abstract

Currently, the source of materials using to construct transport infrastructure is increasingly scarce in Vietnam. Therefore, it is very necessary to study solutions for utilizing steel slag as aggregates for asphalt concrete. This paper evaluated initially the possibility of use of 50% and 75% steel slag in Ba Ria-Vung Tau replacement aggregates for stone mastic asphalt with a nominal maximum aggregate size of 12,5mm (SMA 12,5). Based on the laboratory experiments, the study evaluated the required technical parameters of SMA 12,5 in terms of drain down characteristic, Cantabro abrasion loss, Marshall stability, Marshall stability ratio, and rutting according to TCCS36:2021/TCDBVN. Test results indicated the possibility of use of 50% steel slag replacement aggregates for SMA 12,5 in pavement construction.
