Abstract

The optical properties of the vapor transport equilibration technique (VTE) treated Er:LiNbO3 and Mg:Er:LiNbO3 crystals were investigated. Compared to the congruent Er:LiNbO3, the blue shift of absorption edge and the significant reduction of OH- absorption band indicated that the VTE treatment have brought the crystal closer to the stoichiometric composition. The luminescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the VTE treated Mg:Er:LiNbO3 crystal increased up to 2.2 times than in the congruent Mg:Er:LiNbO3 crystal. The periodically poled 180° domain reversal in the 1.0 mm near-stoichiometric Mg:Er:LiNbO3 crystal was successfully achieved by using 3.5kV switch field. A reasonable explanation for experiment results is given, which based on Li-site vacancy point defect model.
