Abstract

As data rate in optical fiber communication system increases to 40Gbit/s in single channel, the impact of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on system performance becomes more important in high speed and long distance transmission system. This paper studies on the system penalties induced by PMD with different electrical bandwidths of receiver for four different modulation formats such as NRZ(not return to zero), RZ(return to zero), CSRZ(carrier suppressed return to zero) and duobinary. We find that the system penalties induced by PMD show a strong dependence on both the electrical bandwidth of the receiver and modulation format.
