Abstract

The polymeric supramolecular host (H1) containing fluorophore benzimidazole and pillar[5]arene was designed and prepared. H1 formed the linear and cross-linked supramolecules with the designed guest molecules, naphthalimide-containing G1 and naphthopyran-containing G2. The Job's plot indicated the complex formation between the host pillar[5]arene and guest N-butyl bromide with 1:1 stoichiometry. The fluorescence of benzimidazole on host H1 in solution was quenched upon the addition of guest G1 and G2, the spectroscopy study demonstrated the fluorescence quenching can be ascribed to the energy transfer from benzimidazole to naphthalimide or naphthopyran. In addition, the photochromic reaction of naphthopyran can reversibly modulate the fluorescence of benzimidazole upon the photochromic reaction. Thus, the fluorescence of benzimidazole on H1 can be modulated by two modes, energy transfer and photochromic reaction of naphthopyran.
