Abstract

A numerical study has been carried out to investigate disturbances of blood flow through coronary artery with different shaped restrictions. From this study, it is revealed that pressure drop and vortex size is more for sharp edged stenosis, whereas wall shear stress rise is more in case of smooth shaped stenosis. The physiological impact on initiation and progression of disease of artery due to pressure drop increases with stricture length but impact due to peak wall shear stress decreases with stricture length for any shaped restrictions. Mathematical models are developed to predict extent of blockage and, corresponding reattachment length and wall shear stress rise for all shaped restrictions.
