Abstract
Eggs of the sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus, Psammechinus microtuberculatus, and Arbacia lixula were treated with homologous rabbit antisera. If the electrolyte content of the medium was lower than that of ordinary sea water, a coagulation of the jelly could be observed. Furthermore, the cell surface was attacked specifically. Antisera for suspensions of whole cells caused a parthenogenetic activation of the eggs. Control sera from untreated rabbits had no visible effect. The reactions observed were species-specific.
