Abstract

The director arrangement of cholesteric liquid crystals with planar texture (CLCPT) in PAN and TN cells is demonstrated in this paper. First, two types of director arrangements of CLCPT in PAN and TN cell were presented according to experience and their expressions were developed by using the liquid crystal (LC) elasticity theory, also the theoretical expressions for reflectance and transmittance at a certain incident angle of the CLCPT cell corresponding to four kinds of polarization combinations (Rpp, Rps, Rsp, Rss, Tpp, Tps, Tsp, Tss) were deduced based on the multilayer optical theory. Then the fully leaky optical guided wave (FLOGW) method was introduced to prove the correctness of the two types of director arrangements presented above. During the implementation of this method, 8 different CLCPT cell samples were made considering the natural pitch of CLC, cell thickness and anchoring direction of cell substrates. Further, the experimental and theoretical curves for Rpp and Rss variation with incident angle of each sample were obtained and fitted correspondingly. Thus, by analyzing the fitting results, the director arrangement characteristics of the CLCPT in PAN and TN cells were demonstrated experimentally.
