Abstract

Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analyses were performed to study the crystallization of Al 88.5Y 6.5Ni 5 (at.%) amorphous alloy ribbons prepared by melt spinning. Four stages of transformation from amorphous to equilibrium state can be distinguished. All reaction temperatures were determined, and reaction activation energies were also derived. It is shown that the initial crystallization temperature and peak crystallization temperature at a heating rate of 20 K min −1 are 453 K and 469 K respectively, and the initial crystallization activation energy and peak crystallization activation energy are 168 kJ mol −1 and 163 kJ mol −1, respectively. The comparative crystallization temperature and activation energy indicate the good stability of this amorphous alloy.
