Abstract

Blends composed of polyamide 6 (PA6) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) irradiated by γ-ray with different irradiation times in oxygen atmosphere were prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning colorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results of blends are presented. The polar oxidized groups on the HDPE chains produced via γ-ray irradiation induce a more uniform distribution of polyamide 6 phase in the polythene matrix in comparison with that in nonirradiated HDPE matrix. This effect can be attributed to the interactions among the functional polar groups of the HDPE and PA6. Testing results show that a moderate radiation for HDPE is good to the barrier and mechanical properties of the blends.
