Abstract

Objective To investigate the ability of self-care, coping style and self-stigma in patients with depression. Methods From June 2016 to June 2017, 80 patients with depression and 80 healthy controls were investigated using the self-care ability scale (ESCA), coping style scale and mental illness self-stigma scale (ISMI). Pearson single factor analysis was used to analyze the relationship between self-care ability and coping style of patients with depression and self-stigma. Results The scores of self-care ability, various dimensions and positive coping style of depressed patients were lower than those of healthy control group, while the scores of negative coping style and self-stigma of depressed patients were significantly higher than those of healthy control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). In addition, with the aggravation of depression, the self-care ability of patients and the score of positive coping style in all dimensions decreased significantly, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The scores of negative coping style and self-stigma were significantly increased, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). According to Pearson single factor analysis, HAMD score was positively correlated with total self-stigma score, discrimination experience and negative coping style, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was a negative correlation with the total score of patients' self-care ability, self-care skills, health knowledge and positive coping style, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusions Depression patients have poor self-care ability, high sense of self-stigma, and a negative attitude towards the disease.Improving patients' self-care ability and promoting patients to actively cope with diseases will be conducive to the prognosis of patients. Key words: Depression; Self-care ability; Coping style; Self-care sense of shame
