Abstract
Therapeutic hypothermia is known as an effective method for cerebral protection. However, its application is limited due to the complications of whole body hypothermia and low effectiveness of ice blankets and caps. Recently, internal carotid artery perfusion has drawn considerable attentions with the advantages of high effectiveness, long maintenance time, blood dilution and fleshing of inflammatory mediators. This article reviewed the principle, methods and advantages of carotid selective brain cooling, discuss carotid infusion for selective brain cooling in recent study, so as to provide more safely and reliable methods for cerebral protection and improve long-term quality of life.
