Abstract

Objective To investigate prevalence ofponticulus posticus in patients with cleft lip and palate, and the relationship between cleft lip and palate and ponticulus posticus. Methods We selected 102 patients with cleft lip and palate as experimental group and 233 with normal lip and palate as the control group, then recorded the type of ponticulus posticus(no ponticulus positus, incomplete ponticulus posticus, complete ponticulus posticus) by their lateral cephalometric radiographs. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 25.0. Results The prevalence of ponticulus posticus was 30.39% in the experimental group, but was 15.02% in the control group, and the prevalence between the two groups was statistically significant(P=0.005). No difference were found on the prevalence of ponticulus posticus between genders in two groups(P=0.615, P=0.921). Cleft lip and palate and ponticulus posticus were positively correlated, with significant difference(P=0.001) (Pearson contingency coefficient r= 0.175). The pearson contingency coefficient r between gender and ponticulus posticus in two groups were 0.078 and 0.030, respectively, with no significant difference(P=0.432, P=0.645). Conclusions The correlation between ponticulus posticus and cleft lip and palate was significant. The prevalence of ponticulus posticus in patients with cleft lip and palate were higher than that in non-cleft lip and palate patiects. Key words: Cleft lip and palate; Ponticulus posticus
