Abstract

This study investigated the suitability of neutral sulfite semi-chemical (NSSC) poplar pulp as an alternative for NSSC fluting pulp in Mazandaran Wood and Paper Industries (MWPI), Iran. Handsheets with a base weight of 127 g/m2 and yield of about 75 % were made by mixing the poplar and MWPI pulps at proportions of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt%. Physical, mechanical, and optical properties were evaluated using TAPPI and ISO standards. Addition of poplar NSSC pulp improved the tensile index, stiffness index, burst index, tear index, CMT index, breaking length index, and porosity index of the handsheets in comparison with the MWPI NSSC pulp. According to this study, optimum properties of fluting paper obtained by 50 % poplar NSSC pulp + 50 % MWPI NSSC pulp.
