Abstract
Flotation, as one of the most likely methods to improve the recovery efficiency of cordierite from spent automotive catalysts, requires systematic research and optimization. In this study, an efficient flotation process with cordierite recovery of 85.2 % was proposed. The mechanism of flotation was studied by SEM-EDS, XPS, AFM. SEM-EDS confirmed that Si distributed mainly in the cordierite carrier of spent automotive catalysts and Al (not in cordierite structure) distributed mainly in the washcoat. XPS results showed that the adsorption strength of NaOL (sodium oleate) was greater than that of Na2O⋅3SiO2 (sodium silicate) on the surface of washcoat. AFM results showed that the adsorption effect of Na2O⋅3SiO2 was stronger than that of NaOL on the surface of cordierite carrier. In summary, internal reasons to realize cordierite recovery from spent automobile catalysts by flotation were the selective adsorption of NaOL on the surface of washcoat and Na2O⋅3SiO2 on the surface of cordierite.
