Abstract
Along with the acceleration of urbanization process, the surviving of traditional dwellings in city's historic districts is in a dilemma due to reconstruction or demolition. Actually, many traditional dwellings have been or being demolished under a new round of urban construction. The pattern of life in urban areas and urban fabric are changing, resulting in the effects on historical architecture in urban areas, especially in historical and cultural cities. This paper analyses the conservation practices on remaining dwellings in the historical districts, according to technical conditions indifferent historical periods. There are three conservation methods: self-conversation, local repair and renewal. On the basis of the dweller surveys in the existing residential areas, we analyze the effects of three methods on protecting their own characteristics from the purpose of the protector, feelings of the residents and practical effect of protection. The paper puts forward a conclusion based on the above research, as well as some advices on new protection models.
