Abstract

Objective To study the status of nursing related knowledge of caregivers of elderly patients indwelling gastric tube for nasal feeding,provide theoretical foundation for health education,and improve nursing quality for senile patients at home.Methods Self-designed questionnaire and convenience sampling were used to investigate 200 caregivers of elderly patients indwelling gastric tube for nasal feeding from 3 Grade A hospitals in Beijing.Results Totals of 198 questionnaires out of 200 were recovered,with the effective rate of 99%.80.80%-100% of the caregivers had better understanding of patients' mental status (100.00%),preparation before feeding (99.50%),dealing with cough during feeding (97.47%),operating time after feeding (80.80%) and position maintaining (98.99%).83.33%-97.47% of the caregivers had less understanding of maximum feeding amount eve~ time (97.47%),temperature of feeding fluid (85.35%),temperature measurement (85.86%),position during feeding (83.33%),reserve and warming of nutrient fluid (83.84%).Caregivers had good knowledge of changing time for feeding tube (97.47%) and fixing method of feeding tube (97.98%),but had no knowledge of danger of repeated indwelling feeding tube (66.67%) and protective measures for private tube drawing (73.74%).More than 60.60% caregivers had little knowledge of the definition of aspiration as complication (77.78%),clinical manifestation (60.60%),hazards (60.60%),dealing methods (73.23%) and risk groups (82.83%).Conclusions Nursing related knowledge of caregivers of elderly patients indwelling gastric tube for nasal feeding still need improvement,which can be achieved by health education and training,in order to raise their cognitive level and ensure the quality of life for senile patients at home.
