Abstract

The magneto-optic (MO) coupled mode equations (CMEs) of linearly polarized (LP) guided light in MO fibers are deduced according to the coupled mode perturbation theory. The MO-CMEs are very useful for designing magnetically tunable multimode fiber devices. The modal dependency of MO coupling coefficient is derived, and the theoretical results are consistent with the simulated data. Our research shows that, the influence of the inter-mode-group (MG) coupling on the intra-MG polarization conversion efficiency (PCE) can be greatly reduced by appropriately adjusting the applied magnetic field and optimizing the MO-fiber length; For the application of spatial mode converters, we can further improve the inter-MG mode conversion efficiency (MCE) by using the MO fiber with a larger specific Faraday rotation.
